Ayurvedic Diet Guidelines
A personalized approach to eating based on your body type, digestion, current imbalances, and health concerns.
Ayurveda has used individualized dietary guidelines for centuries based on a simple principle: we are all different, so the same diet is not right for everyone.
There Is No Universal “Healthy Diet”
Diets such as low-fat, vegan, low-carbohydrate, and even carnivore diets may benefit the right person with the right health needs. The problem begins when one approach is promoted as appropriate for everyone.
People are often told to eat certain foods simply because they contain particular nutrients or are considered healthy. But what if those foods cause gas, bloating, heaviness, weight gain, or simply do not agree with you?
Eliminating grains may make sense for one person, but what about someone who is underweight and needs more nourishing carbohydrates? A high-fat, high-protein diet may help another person, but may be inappropriate for someone already dealing with excess weight, high blood fats, or fatty liver.
Ayurveda asks a different question:
“Which foods are appropriate for this particular person?”
Thinking only in terms of “good foods” and “bad foods” is often too simplistic. Your natural Ayurvedic constitution, current imbalance, digestion, weight, food reactions, lifestyle, and existing health concerns can all influence which foods are most appropriate for you.
I frequently meet people who are eating foods every day that they do not particularly enjoy—or foods that cause digestive discomfort—simply because they have read or heard that those foods are healthy.
